Today the Church celebrates the Feast Day of St. Luke.

St. Luke bore witness to the Faith by authoring the Gospel that bears his name and the Acts of the Apostles. Though not one of the Twelve Apostles, his association with individuals who had witnessed Christ’s public ministry provided him the insight to compose these New Testament books.

While sharing significant events in Christ’s life from a historical perspective, St. Luke was instrumental in declaring that the Gentiles were also coheirs of the promise of Christ. A physician by trade and a faithful companion of St. Paul, the two evangelized the Faith on their journeys to Macedonia, Greece, and Antioch. Of all Christ’s parables, perhaps the most familiar story is the Prodigal Son, which appears only in St. Luke’s Gospel. Here, he beautifully portrays God’s unconditional love and endless mercy for repentant sinners. For centuries, this parable has instilled hope in individuals who have experienced a loved one straying from Christ.

Please visit our special page dedicated to St. Luke, where we answer questions, such as:

•What is the primary purpose of the writings in the Gospel of Luke?

•What were some significant events that St. Luke covered in his Gospel?

•How does the Gospel of Luke portray the Blessed Virgin Mary?

•What does the spiritual lesson of the Parable of the Prodigal Son teach us?
